The root password is probably not set - please login as a normal user, then do "sudo su" and change the root password (with the passwd command)

Hi Graham, Actually the HDMI display on the IPI is enabled through a DSI to HDMI bridge, so there is no EDID coming in to xrandr. You will most likely need to modify the kernel for this.
