Dead device - No BIOS - IPMI works. -- Resolved


  • Hello you all!

    My gear just arrived, so I started hooking everything up.

    When I plug in power - My led3 indicator gives me "82" - as push power btn, the led changes to "FF".

    I get no BIOS promt, but Im able to connect to the web-interface and use IPMI tools.

    Just to make sure, I assume that I dont need to install an additional graphics card to make start?

    Where I can find a proper manual to debug this problem. I assume the LED indication is suppose to mean something.

    Perhaps I should also mention that I have installed 256gb of RAM, and Im using a 500w power supply.

    Any pointers on how to proceed is very much appreciated.

    Btw, the guide and docs should most defenitely update the instructions for where the CPU fan is supposed to be installed

    That was informative.
    Does this mean its caused by the RAM-sticks? Whats the solution. Find it hard to believe both modules are broken and they seem to be within specs for the devkit?

    Does this also mean I dont need to worry about the carrier or the module to be broken?
    I assume 500watt power supply also is within spec. If I understand the datasheet, 300watt should be more then sufficient.

    Thanks for your help and information. I'm guessing one of the DIMMs may be damaged or a compibility problem.
    Do you see any console log after "ERROR initialization faliure. Enter safemode..."? Or it's just stuck?
    Here is a simple method to verify the issue.
    Let's first check some basic key point, please confirm and tighten the 9 star-shaped screws on the CPU base and CPU cover.


    Please try to boot up the system with 1 of those 2 memory DIMM for those 2 DIMM, any slot can be installed for 1 DIMM configuration, and check the system can be boot up or not and you can check the console log to verify it.
    Do you have other models of DDR4 RDIMM memory?

    Hello! Thanks for your reply.

    Im not sure what 9 star shaped screws you are talking about. 
    The screws connecting the cpu-module to the carrier board is only 8? (I assume they are the ones you are talking about. They seem to be tightned and from what I can see, the connectors are flush to the socket.

    In an early attempt to eliminate sources of errors I tried to use only one dimm at a time, but I did not have the debug messages available then - So I will take a new run at that.

    The system is not stuck after the last message - it starts repeating itself over and over again, with a few seconds of sleep in between.

    I noticed that paste between cpu and the cooler (cooling block) was rock hard and I find it hard to believe it had any heat transfering capabilities to talk about. Will also try to replace the paste with a new layer of paste.

    Regarding the availablity of a third RDIMM, no - will have to go out shopping for that, it will take me a week before it arrives.

    I consulted the datasheet again, and it seems like the DIMM's is within spec. What do your reading of the spec conclude?

    An overall observation - The information provided here and on adlink is full of inconsistencies and sometimes just wrong.

    For example; the little pamflet that arrived with the kit - It said, connect cpu-fan to FAN 0. When connected to FAN 0 - it doesnt start spinning. I moved it to FAN 1 and it seems to work just fine.

    In the wiki guide - The fan is connected to the cpu-module - But there is no converter cable in the kit.

    Perhaps, either open up the wiki for external edit suggestions or take the time to revise it.
    The external link to the RAM AVL list is also broken.

    I'll get back to you when I'm done hooking everything back up for testing.


  • I have now tested to move one stick around.

    Still getting the same error.

    where X is changing to the current slot of the DIMM.

    I assume I might of been in bad luck - either managed to get incompatible sticks or multiple broken.

    Can someone please confirm that this module; M393A8G40AB2-CWE is compatible.
    The above mentioned module is also found in the Ampere Altra AVL.

    Let me check your purchase record for the fan cable lost problem, maybe there is any misunderstanding, I will feedbach to you as soon as I can.

    And the RAM AVL link is workable on my end, I also use my own cell phone to check it, could you please check it again? Which brower you was using? Please let me know.

    TBH, if you compare the DRAM specfication and the DRAM datasheet, you are not able to get any clue for the compatbility issue, because most of the DRAM manufacture will try to optimize the DRAM firmware for those popular X86 CPU system(INTEL/AMD).

    So a quickly and simple method is following the AVL list for your system.

      Luckly,the DIMM M393A8G40AB2-CWE has been varified and the configuration is 6 x 64GB, so I am sure this RAM can be  used for AADK/AADP the system.

    Here are some questions for you:

    So those two M386AAG40AM3-CWE both can't boot up with the AADK on your end?

    I think you're looking for a large RAM for your system, here is a modle and I've test it before, HMABAGR7A2R4N-XS 128GB 3200 and it works fine, provided for your reference.

    I found a supplier that is able to send me new sticks on short notice, So will probably/hopefully recieve six new sticks of the confirmed 64gb modules today or tomorrow.

    As Im a total beginner when it comes to procedures and practices when it comes to mounting cpu's that requires Torx-tools, I think I'll wait with messing with fastening screws for the cpu-socket until problem is verified to be related or not to the sticks =)

    Also, would the system really be able to detect the sticks at all - if the cpu wasnt properly mounted? I guess I could get weird problems with misaligned or glitching, but in this case the system detects the sticks and wont proceed because of them.

    I'll get back with an update on how the AVL confirmed dimms behave.

    If the screwdriver torque is not right, the system may not be able to boot up or lose memory...
    For example, install 16GB x6 RAM, but you can only get 16GB or 32GB or 64GB.
    Because the CPU ball needs to be connected to the CPU socket pins, and some of these pins are directly connect to the CPU and RAM.
    Please let me know if any update or problem, good luck.

    I got 6 new fresh RAM-sticks. All of the recommended type and model from the AVL.
    The system now boots, but it fails to use all six of the installed RAM.

    I have verified every single stick as working, by connecting them one by one on one of the working sockets.

    The system seems to detect all six of my sticks, but only loads one of them.
    Have look at the output from the RS232 port.

    I took your advice and checked the screws and I was able to conclude that the screws has not been mounted with equal torque as some of them where very loose.

    But the problem remain and the output from above is equal with the output from before checking the screws

    The chances of 5 out of 6 DIMMs being bad are too low.
    So I hope you can help me do the following things.
    First, use a torque screwdriver to tighten the CPU screw cover in the order 1-2-3-4-5, and set the torque to 12-14in-lb.
    Second, I drew a picture to show you the relationship between mc[x] in the serial log and the physical memory slot as below link.

    I hope you can use the DIMM on the original mc1 slot(can work with AADK) and place it on another slot ( 0/2/3/4/5), confirm whether the system can be successfully booted.
    Then you can try to place the other 5 DIMMs that were unable to boot on mc0/2/3/4/5 into the slots of mc1 to see if it is a memory problem.

    In addition, we can try to fill up the memory again.
    First, boot to the EDKII settings menu, select the DEVICE MANAGER --> PLATFORM MANAGER --> Memory Configuration.
    After finding the Memory Operating Speed ​​option, set it as 2133.
    Please press F10 at the bottom of this tab to save after completing the modification, then return to the top EDKII tab and select RESET.
    The system will import the previous settings and restart.
    Now, you can start to observe the SERIAL LOG messages. , and provide it to me.

    I have tested every single DIMM in MC[0] and MC[1] and it is confirmed it will detect and report every single of the 6 DIMMs as working while in MC[0,1]. Perhaps im answering something you didnt ask; but no - The system only boots and reports the DIMMS as functional in MC[0|1]

  • FWIW we bought 6 Corsair 16GB ECC DDR4-3200MT/s DIIMMs for our Altra and they didn't work (I don't remember the message nor the exact model). We had to pick some DIMMs from other servers to get something working. If you have a server around with some DDR4 memory, I suggest you try to swap the DIMMs to see if it's getting better.

    It's not uncommon to see memory incompatibilities on servers, and even the servers from which I picked the RAM for our Altra didn't accept most of the other ones I tried to give them in exchange. Sometimes the voltage requirements are out of spec, usually DRAM sticks marked "XMP compatible" advertise values that server boards refuse to use, and timings can also cause difficulties.

    It might be possible that your only working DRAM is just at the edge of tolerance and that it properly finishes the training phase and that it's just pure luck. So really, try to steal DRAMs around from various machines.


  • @Willy Tarreau Well, connecting them seperately on MC[0] or MC[1] works absolutely fine.
    Sounds very weird, that none will work on MC[2|4|5|7] because of a spec problem.. A spec problem for a DIMM listed in the AVL.


  • Yeah that definitely sounds weird. But if you find other (read *different*) DIMMs that produce the exact same totally strange behavior, you could likely conclude that the DIMMs are not at fault and that maybe the CPU module is (after all, who know, maybe for whatever reason there is a bent pint or a weak solder joint somewhere, or it took a static discharge).

    As it seems, the CPU hasnt been mounted correctly on my rigg. 
    As Im missing a correct torque tool - I did some tickling of the dragons tail just to see if I could get some different results. As of now, 5 of my total 6 DIMMS is loading without error giving me for now a total of 256gb.

    I think I put this issue on pause, while Im trying to acquire the correct tools for the job and post my final results after that is done.

    Perhaps send along a 1.5Nm torque tool for future customer deliveries. They seem to be more cheap then easy to find!

    Everything seems to be 100% on track now.

    I'm super pleased with the support and service recieved - at the same time I want to send some feedback here.

    I didnt pay much attention to it from the start, but now when I have a working system I noticed a couple of things.

    The CPU was incorrectly mounted/tightened .
    1. At first I thought it was bad thermal paste on cpu cooler - But I now realize that the CPU must have pushed down so hard that the original termal paste didnt get any surface contact with the CPU.
    2. Which has now also proved to be the cause of me having the initial trouble of getting the RAM to function.


    Suggestion;
    1. When mounting the CPU before sending - double check the torque.
    2. Or just send it (for me that would have been just fine as well)- but also send along a tool with the correct spec for the customer to double check the torque of mounting and also add that to the instructions as; check before startup.


    And perhaps, put the wiki on github or make it otherwise available for update suggestions.

    Im not sure what the correct approach here is, but the manual instructed me to install the cpu fan to the connector marked FAN_0, what everything seems either the instruction is wrong or the solder mask is. When connected to FAN_1 everything seems to work. The fan does ramp up if the CPU temp goes up.

    Im certain that you would benefit of making the wiki available for edit suggestions.
